In the Netherlands, people receive the state pension regardless of their income. This is usually supplemented by fixed occupational pensions. Could such a model secure pensions for us in the future? The pension systems in Germany and the Netherlands significantly differ in terms of their structure, funding and the role of occupational pensions. Whilst the German statutory pension is closely linked to a person’s employment history, income and contributions paid, the Dutch model relies on a basic state pension and occupational pensions that are usually fixed under collective agreements.
