Y-Kollektiv: Foreigners criminal, East Germans racist?
The subject of migration has dominated the federal election campaign – but what does this mean for the people being discussed? Journalist Lena Elfers wants to get to the bottom of the issue. She stepped out of her comfort zone and her own bubble and dares an experiment for Y-Kollektiv: for ten days, she completes an internship in a refugee shelter in Erfurt while living in a neighbourhood where the AfD won a majority in the last election. Two worlds that are often pitted against each other come face to face for Lena.
This is a story about prejudices, insecurities and encounters that break through clichés. Lena meets people with completely different political views who she nevertheless sympathises with. And even among the refugees, not everyone fits into the image that many have – both in one direction and the other.
Between rejection and rapprochement, the documentary seeks the truth behind the clichés. It reveals how political radicalisation shapes everyday life and poses the pressing question: how can we still live together in an increasingly divided society?
Y-Kollektiv is ARD’s youth-focused documentary format, known for its transparent, self-critical approach and in-depth reporting. The journalists dive into people’s lives with fresh perspectives – emphasizing thorough research, immersive observation, and encounters on equal terms.
