The aim of this international co-production is to tell about the Holocaust. From beginning to end and beyond, to the present day. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz on 27 January 2015, the 8-part series draws attention to what we all believe we have long known – and yet cannot grasp.
It is less about the why than about the how. How could it happen that six million Jews were murdered before the eyes of the world? The How directs our attention to the course of events. The chronology, the apparatus that made the annihilation possible, becomes visible. Also the employees of the apparatus, the perpetrators, come into view. A pattern becomes clear that begins with the mockery and threat of Jews and continues through discrimination and exclusion to systematic plundering until it ends with persecution, imprisonment and murder.
