Y-Kollektiv: Cocaine Chase

Cocaine is one of the most lucrative drugs worldwide, and the Port of Hamburg has become a central hub. Almost on a weekly basis, massive seizures are reported by police and special task forces. In the latest major bust alone, authorities confiscated a total of 35.5 tons of cocaine. Despite these dimensions, experts estimate that only about 5-10 percent of the cocaine smuggled from South America is discovered and seized. The rest finds its way into the hands of consumers.
In November 2023, the city of Hamburg founded the “Alliance for a Safe Port of Hamburg” to combat cocaine smugglers. Since the beginning of the year, several European ports have also joined forces to coordinate more effectively against smugglers.
Reporter Frederik Fleig, a newcomer to Hamburg, wants to understand the extent of smuggling taking place at the Port of Hamburg, the logistics of the cartels, and who profits from this lucrative cocaine business. Frederik accompanies two operations by a special customs unit dealing with cocaine smuggling. He speaks with the head of police at the new Hamburg Port Security Center, who aims to usher in a new era for Hamburg’s fight against cocaine. Smugglers’ methods are exposed, including how they pressure port employees with bribes and threats of violence.
“Y-Kollektiv” is ARD’s youth-focused format for documentaries with a transparent, self-critical approach and depth. The reporters dive into people’s lives with fresh perspectives. The focus is on transparent research, participatory observation, and meeting others on equal terms
